Carpenter Jailed 12 Years For Defilement

An Accra Circuit Court on Thursday sentenced a 48 year old carpenter, John Hator to 12 years imprisonment for defiling a 10-year- old pupil.

Hator pleaded not guilty to the charge of defilement but was found guilty.

Prosecuting Chief Inspector I. A.A. Ahor told the court presided over by Ms Sedina Agbemava that the complainant was the victim’s mother residing at Abensu near Pokuase in Accra. The convict also resides in the same area.

On March 26, last year, the victim who is a class two pupil was in the house when the convict paid a visit to the complainant in her house at about 1300 hours.

When the convict was leaving, the complainant asked the victim to take two of her moulding machines to a welder nearby for repairs at a fee of GH¢2.00.

Prosecution said the convict requested that he would go with the victim to the repairer’s place. On their way, Hator took the money from the victim for safekeeping.

On reaching the repairer’s workshop, the convict went to his house without giving the money to the victim.

Prosecution said Hator went for a mat and a bible from his house and went to relax in an uncompleted building which was about 80 meters from his house.

The victim followed up to Hator’s house and she was informed by his (Hator’s) wife that he had left to an uncompleted building nearby to relax.

On reaching there, the convict lured the victim into one of the rooms and had sex with the victim.

When the victim attempted to scream, the convict covered her mouth with his hand and after the act, he gave the victim GH¢2.00 and warned her not to inform anyone else he would “cut off her neck.”

Prosecution said immediately the victim returned home; the complainant detected some changes in her and when she inspected the victim’s vagina, she saw whitish liquid around the area.

When quizzed, the victim let the cat out of the bag. The complainant asked the victim to accompany her to where the convict was relaxing and with the assistance of some good Samaritans, Hator was apprehended and sent to Police Station at Pokuase.

The victim, prosecution said, was medically examined and on March 29, last year, the case was transferred to the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit, Tesano.
